End of Two-Year SSL Certificates

Industry Update: End of Two-Year SSL Certificates

Important Update: SSL/TLS Certificates Now Limited to 1-Year Validity

As of August 19, 2020, SSL/TLS providers worldwide have officially ended the availability of two-year SSL/TLS Certificates. This change comes in response to an industry-wide requirement, with major browsers—including Safari, Chrome, and Firefox—set to distrust any two-year certificates issued after August 30, 2020.

Key Changes:

  • All SSL/TLS Certificates are now limited to a maximum of 1 year validity.
  • Customers who previously relied on two-year certificates will now need to complete validation and reinstallation every year, rather than once every two years.

Multi-Year Purchases
You may still pay upfront for up to 5 years of coverage, but certificates will only be issued in 1-year increments. For example:

  • 2 Years = issued as 1 year + 1 year (validation required twice)
  • 3 Years = 1 year + 1 year + 1 year (validation required three times)
  • 4 Years = 1 year + 1 year + 1 year + 1 year (validation required four times)
  • 5 Years = 1 year + 1 year + 1 year + 1 year + 1 year (validation required five times)

What This Means for You
Paying for multiple years at once can still reduce your administrative cost for billing, but please keep in mind that certificate validation and installation will now be an annual requirement.
